Royal Reconciliation? Not so fast.
The question on everyone's lips ignores the reality of the situation
Hello Dear Readers,
Wow. What an absolutely bonkers past few days we’ve all had! Every time I sat down to write something, I’d get a new, flashing BREAKING NEWS update and I’d have to go back and edit what I wrote, only to get another update which prompted another edit.
King Charles’s cancer diagnosis, a blink-and-you-miss-it PR visit by Harry, briefs to the media by both sides, Prince William back to Royal events this week and Meghan magically being papped grinning like a Cheshire Cat behind the wheel. Drinking coffee out of a ceramic mug was just the start.
Yesterday saw Harry doing a paid gig, for an awards show streamed exclusively on Paramount + (parent company to CBS, the studio behind One Love the movie the Sussexes were likely paid to attend in Jamaica), and a lawsuit settled for a fraction of what was asked. Readers, I’m exhausted. In the midst of all these things happening the one question everyone’s asking is “Will the Royal Family ever reconcile with Harry”.
Will King Charles ever reconcile with his son?
And more pointedly, will Prince William ever reconcile with Prince Harry?
I don’t have the answers, but I do have some thoughts and opinions on the matter. It comes down a few things: How each side remembers where it all fell apart, William and Harry’s upbringing, how their exposure to relationships differed, and a bonus discussion on mother in laws who can make life difficult. Raise of hands, who can relate?
Before we begin, I want to disabuse everyone from the notion that what we see now is all Meghan’s doing. Believing this is unfair to her and gives too much courtesy to Harry. I don’t deny that she inflames the situation, but the trope of blaming the woman endures because it’s easy. I’ve long believed that Harry’s a very present co-captain of this ship, along with Meghan.
